Sustainable shrimp farming

The Challenge

Tropical shrimp and tuna are highly popular on the European market. Yet smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia face major challenges, including environmental waste management, climate resilience, farmer’s income and traceability. Fish Tales Foundation, together with Good Fish, PT. Atina, and the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative (ASIC), developed the project Creating a Future-Proof Indonesian Shrimp Supply Chain to support these farmers.

Our Approach

Since 2018, ASIC and project partners have worked with shrimp farmers through an Aquaculture Improvement Program. Farmers received training on sustainable practices, social and gender standards, and farm management, alongside verification protocols to ensure transparency. The farmers produce black tiger shrimp in extensive, chemical-free earthen ponds using natural feeds, organized in farmer groups and coordinated with Atina’s processing facilities. Continuous support from Atina included workshops on environmental and social topics as well as farm management. We also studied farmers’ incomes and did a local living wage benchmark and explored pathways toward ASC certification and further ASIC verification.

Making an impact

The project successfully strengthened the shrimp supply chain, enhanced farmer knowledge, and supported sustainable livelihoods. While the project has now concluded, the systems, training, and partnerships established provide a lasting foundation for continued sustainable shrimp farming in Indonesia.
